Sorrowful Christ - that is, a depiction of Jesus in a sitting position, pondering, sad and worried, with a crown of thorns, and traces of scourging, as if he had stopped under the emotional weight of sins when Roman soldiers were preparing the cross for him.

This depiction of the Messiah is also often used as an allegorical representation of the entirety of the Lord's passion, in which Jesus' physical pain is combined with the crushing spiritual weight of the sins of all humanity and the sorrow that Christ must have felt, knowing how much evil had been done in the world.
